The Wonderland Rules is a reader-supported publication. They seek him here, they seek him there, the ladies seek him everywhere, that damned elusive Pimpernel.

This column is late because the dog ate my homework I wanted to test out Substack’s scheduled posting feature. Rollins’s Review columns will return to their regular Friday schedule next week.

I learn something new I can use to better my life every time I read dynomight. He’s fantastic and you should read him.

DYNOMIGHT INTERNET NEWSLETTER
How much does a CT scan affect life expectancy?
dynomight.net/scans You’re probably aware that if you get a CT scan, that exposes you to a fair amount of radiation. But I’ve always wondered—how much should I care about that? So here’s an attempt at a rough estimate. As always, I think the right way…

Ines between Chairs of Raised by Germans writes about narcissism a lot. I’m boosting this column of hers in part because I like her and in part because I like my readers; if your sweetie does anything listed in her piece more than, say, once in the space of a year…I’d cut the cord.

Raised by Germans
Oh My God, Why?
Oh, the drama. We all know drama when living with a narcissist. The self created drama that springs on you seemingly out of nowhere. Every day. Be it that all over sudden a previously scheduled time to leave for an appointment is no longer good enough and artificial urgency is created by stating “We should leave now, traffic sucks at this time.” Or be it…

Matt Stoller is the Chris from Karlstack of antitrust. He is one of the great archetype examples of public interest journalism. I can’t say enough good things about him.

BIG by Matt Stoller

I don’t think enough people understand just how revolutionary economist Bryan Caplan is. And by “revolutionary,” I mean fucking subversive, in the best possible way.

Bet On It
Skip the Line Permits: A Modest Proposal
Many theme parks now allow guests to pay a hefty surcharge for a “skip the line” pass. The economic logic is ironclad: Everyone says his time is valuable, but actions speak louder the words. To save the truly valuable time, charge a price and see what happens. Some people barely mind waiting, but others are truly desperate to get a move on…

Holly Math Nerd on purity culture, wokeness, and masculinity. The article is top notch, and there are bonus New England foliage photos. Holly is one of my favorites.

I have no connection to the military other than friends who are or were in it (and they have my sympathy for the shit they have to put up with), but I like CDR Salamander. He’s unvarnished and salty, and the war stories about war heroes he posts a couple times a week are often poignant and always impressive. Worth a read.

CDR Salamander
Diversity Thursday
Another DivThu that is somewhere between a Rorschach test and "it speaks for itself." Like so many of these "DEI" conferences, I would first have you note that they in no way actually reflect either "what the fleet looks like" or what the nation "looks like" - two otherwise meaningless measures of effectiveness that they demand of everyone but rarely mee…

I’ve boosted Harrison Koehli before and almost certainly will again. His take on political pathocracy (government by the deranged) is unusual in both its rigor and its readability; Harrison is a fantastic writer.

Political Ponerology
Redefining Political Evil
A couple weeks ago, some speeches by Italian politician Giorgia Meloni made the rounds on social media. She’s projected to become Italy’s next PM. Oh, and she’s leader of a “far-right, Italian nationalist” party. Her motto, “God, fatherland, family,” apparently bears all “the hallmarks of Italian fascism,” at least according…

Ed West is a conservative Brit who writes eloquently about…everything, it seems like. He’s thoughtful and worth reading.

Wrong Side of History
The conservative case for international aid
The first record I ever bought was ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’, the 1985 re-release of the Bob Geldof/Midge Ure charity single, written and performed to raise money for the Ethiopian famine. (A ‘single’, to all you Zoomers, was a song recorded on vinyl, in this case 7-inches, which you put on a record player in your house. Now, a ‘house’ was something…

Addendum: The Economist thinks it'd be a good idea to put cocaine back on the menu.

Welp.

No way that’ll end badly.
